Dean Answers Questions About Thailand Tourism

Chris asks…

I have a question about Thailand tourism in the south?

I went to Thailand in March and it was pretty busy with mostly Europeans. There were a lot of young people to meet. I am a single 27 year old guy and would like to meet young people if I go back. Is it busy year round or just during the busy season. I am talking about Koh Phi Phi, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Koh Pangan. I might want to go for a few months.
Also curious about the nightlife during off season times.

Dean answers:

The reason it’s call the low season is because it’s the rainy season and most people want to come during the time it is a little cooler and no rain. So of course it is a little slower but then again many people go during this time because resorts are cheaper and it’s still a good time to go. Also, don’t worry the bars are still going strong and it give you more of a choice with less people to compete with the girl of your dream.

Mark asks…

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Tourism For Thailand ?

I Am Doing Geography Coursework And I Can’t Find Any Facts And Figures About How Tourism Has Helped And Not Helped Thailand. I Know That It Has Brought More Money, But How And How Much Has It Increased.
Thankyou

Dean answers:

Advantages:

Tourism has had a massive affect on Thailand over the years. It has improved the local infrastructure, provided many employment opportunities, has strengthened their currency and has improved the standard of living for many Thai people.

Disadvantages:

Many young girls are tempted to go into prostitution, as what a tourist pays for sex is good money to them and beautiful land and gorgeous beaches are being damaged by foreigners going over to Thailand to build business (i.e. Hotels, large beach bars, etc).

All in all, I would say that the advantages out weight the disadvantages of tourist visiting Thailand, as its a developing country with may people struggling to make a living. If tourists didn’t visit Thailand then the country would be in big trouble!

Ken asks…

Does prostitution in Thailand discount due to tourism is down?

Prostitution is a main attraction in Thailand but the recent situation made tourism down, wonder if it effect on Thailand sex industry or not?

Dean answers:

Expect to pay bar fine 300 baht from bar and negotiate with Lady anything from 500 – 1000 Baht.
But its up to the Lady if she goes with you.
Show girls bar fine can be a lot higher 600 -1000 Baht and can charge you anything from 1000 – 3000 baht so at the end of the day it’s what the punter wants to pay.
The truth is when times are hard they do lower prices but only advice anyone can give you is not to go with freelancers as if there is a problem later you will not be able to find these girls.
People who have not been to Thailand do not understand Thai people or their culture.
Most Tourists that come to Thailand come as Couples or Families not sex tourists – FACT

George asks…

what are the negetive and positive impact of tourism in thailand?

i need to know the positive and negative impact of tourism in thailand

Dean answers:

Tourism is a positive word. But behind this sweet sounding word are lots of negative consequences too. The positive impact is obvious… Money and income for both the government and locals, of course. Read the thing below i remembered reading once… I went to malaysia instead, not thailand though.

”Many developing countries perceive tourism as a fast track to economic growth. They assume that tourism development requires less investment than other industries; and they believe tourism to be an effective means of creating job opportunities and increasing local income.

Thailand has long ascribed to this point of view; and it has devised a tourism marketing approach which encourages low-, medium-, and high-cost mass tourism to nearly all regions of the country. With the ubiquitous “Land of Smiles” advertising slogan promoted around the world, Thailand has become one of the best known, and most sought after, international tourist destinations.

Despite this success, however, the tourism industry in Thailand is not without problems and controversy. Critics charge that tourism promotion in Thailand has aimed at quantity rather than quality. The explosion of tourism has brought uneven distribution of financial benefits, in favor of large enterprises, while costs are shouldered by local people who have no direct gain from tourist promotion. Worse still are the environmental effects of unbridled tourism development. While the Thai tourism industry touts and actively markets the country’s unique cultures, this commercialization of culture also causes its erosion or corruption. Additionally, interaction between rural Thai dwellers and sophisticated urbanites from more developed countries introduces values, behavior and attitudes which may have corrosive or negative effects on local residents.

Under these circumstances, then, it is worth examining the advantages and disadvantages of the tourism industry in Thailand—and what trends it might take in the future.”

Paul asks…

Why did international tourism to Thailand decrease in 2003?

There was a sharp decrease in tourism in 2003, but it had been rising steadily before that. What would have caused this? Maybe a bombing or and earthquake or something? Thanks :)
It was definitely 2003 xx

Dean answers:

Here are the numbers (2008 was estimated on the website but I found other information that is more recent).

2002 10.8 m
2003 10 m
2004 11.65m
2005 11.52m
2006 13.82 m
2007 14.5 m
2008 14 m
2009 12.8 m (est)

In 2003 there was the SARS scare and a big crackdown on drugs by Thaksin.
In the end of 2004 was the tusnami
2006 was the Avian flu and the beginning of the economic crisis
Late in 2008 it was the Yellow shirt takeover of the Airport
2009 was the Swine flu
There is also the increase in terorism in the south that is an ongoing and escalating problem.

You also have to look at the quality of tourist. Lots less Westerners are going to Thailand but they (Thailand) has made increases with Russian, Japanese, Chinese and Korean tourist. People from these countries fill in the gap and keep the numbers up but the are less affluent and so spend less money while on vacation.
