For a lot of foreigners, building a dating life can be one of the most challenging aspects of living in Korea — because you’ve really got to understand the culture in order to start dating Korean women. So many foreign guys make the same mistakes when they attempt to meet and date Korean girls. Over the years I’ve helped out a lot of these guys and taught them the basics of dating Korean women, but I figured I’d turn it into a blog post for those of you who don’t know me personally.
Mistakes Guys Make When Dating Korean Women
Dating Korean Women, Mistake #1: Thinking that Korean women are easy. I was very excited before I arrived in Korean because I imagined it must be similar to South East Asia: all I had to do was show up, and women would flock to me simply because I was a light-skinned foreigner.

I discovered soon after my arrival that dating Korean women is an entirely different story. I would actually say that in terms of dating Korean women, this is one of the most challenging places in Asia for a foreigner to hook up with the local ladies. It’s certainly a lot different from countries like the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia, where it was ridiculously easy for me to meet women. (I hardly even needed to try; they were constantly smiling at me and EAGER for me to introduce myself! Although I love Korean girls, I can talk all days about the wonders of beautiful Filipina girls…)
Dating Korean Women, Mistake #2: Not keeping in mind that the East and the West are different. This may sound obvious, since we all know that Westerners and Koreans look different. But what guys often overlook is that Western and Korean women THINK and ACT in completely different ways, and this becomes a big factor in dating Korean women.
And I’m not just talking about the women. The whole Korean society and culture is very different from where you grew up.
In regards to dating Korean women, one of these cultural differences is that the man is responsible for escalating the date into something more. This means Korean girls probably won’t give you any clue, hint, or sign that they want you to take things to the “next level.” If you wait too long to hold their hand, caress their hair, or kiss them (when the moment is right), Korean girls will figure that you’re not interested and they will move on to another guy.
Here’s something else to remember about dating Korean women; they prefer for YOU to be in control of the date. Western women are different; typically, they enjoy being in the saddle more and feeling like they are running the interaction. Ultimately, Korean girls feel more comfortable when the man is in control and taking the lead. This means you don’t need to ask her opinion when it’s time to choose a restaurant or a place to have drinks. Be a man with a plan. Korean girls will follow your lead. (Just make sure you choose good places to take them.)
